D12 - Competency framework for academic staff in pharmacy education

Conference Hall A - Section B & C

Organised by FIP’s Academic Pharmacy Section, in collaboration with FIPEd

Chair

Introduction

A competent and capable practitioner workforce is an essential prerequisite for all healthcare professions. This is the opening line of the Global Competency Framework for services provided by the pharmacy workforce compiled by FIPEd in 2012. Before overarching capability or competence, can be determined, the specific competencies that comprise that capability must be identified.

Competencies generally refer to the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that an individual develops through education, training, development and experience. Just as the pharmacy workforce produced needs certain competences to perform the desired services to patients, those who educate and train them also need certain knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours in order to deliver competent graduates. Taken together, these competencies can be formulated into a framework that can contribute to supporting practitioner development within an individual for effective and sustained performance.

The framework would not just describe the professional profiles needed to be achieved for pharmacy educators, listing standards for their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, but also offer a conceptual framework to be used in self- assessment, development and advancement of academic staff globally. Structure, process and outcomes of the concept would be designed to address the academic context, validated by different stakeholders in pharmacy education, but also to achieve the desired impact on the individual reader (user) to start to think about development and advancement strategies.

The framework would be scientifically based on published evidence and academic tradition, but also founded on practical aspects of academic education, addressing ethical and professional standards and needs.
